What is Udemy?

Udemy (short for the Academy of You) is a platform through which individuals can access short courses and further learning online. It is part of a movement called ‘Massive Open Online Courses’.

MOOCs

MOOCs are interactive web platforms and forums that allow teachers to connect with students from a distance. Some of these are available through universities; these have traditionally provided access to accredited learning opportunities. As interest in distance learning has grown more and more universities have worked together with platforms like Coursera to provide access to university courses to those who cannot afford or are unable to attend the institution itself.

Other MOOCs are independent and nonaffiliated. Courses are not necessarily accredited but do offer a pupil the opportunity to expand their skills for their own benefit. They also operate on a ‘for profit’ basis and, instead of obtaining content from institutions, allow individuals to use the platform to offer courses directly to the public. While many of the affiliate MOOCs offer high level business or technical courses nonaffiliated MOOCs offer a full range of content from the basic office skills to more complex qualifications.
